Serene and clean, and so much more… White is, of course, never just “white”, it has many nuances and flavours, and often looks best as a foil to natural wood, warm metallics and its opposite, black. A hit in kitchens for its connotations of cleanliness, likewise bedrooms and bathrooms. But it can also lend a cool sense of solace to any other room too.
if you’re going to go white, then I counsel to keep it simple. Let your choice be the thing: in other words, don’t do it half-heartedly. White is always the perfect foil for all other colours, but if white itself is to be the whole event, then go for it. Do the floors as well! Cover every surface. As ever, texture is essential otherwise it’ll just feel flat and foreboding. However, natural light is key. It’s what will make your space because it will decorate the white with soft shadows and trace shapes and patterns over every surface. When you have this play going on, then white really is right.
1 Classic white This is all about rough plastered walls, whitewashed beams and painted floors used to render everything spotlessly pristine regardless of lumps, bumps or other such delights.
2 Modern white There was a time when the done thing for homes was simply to paint everything pure white, and let only one’s fixtures and fittings do the talking. It was all about the gallery-esque white box for living in concept.
3 Contemporary white This is white with a bit more soul. Colour pops from personal things and texture is woven into a world where the intention is for the white to be more of a calm backdrop to a creative life that’s allowed to be on show.
4 Restful white As a grounding colour for a bedroom, white is innately soothing. It also feels deliciously cool with something of a holiday vibe. However, ensure all light can be adequately blocked out when it’s time for bed, otherwise all that brightness will simply become annoying, rather than soporific.
5 Accessory white From sheepskins to cushions and everything in between, white lends almost anything an air of simplicity and cleanliness that recalls a seductive vision of housekeepers and perpetually tidy homes from a bygone era. And of course, The White Company has made an incredibly profitable business model out of that notion. Even if they also carry other colours now too!
6 Essential white There are certain things that I firmly believe should always be white… namely, loo roll, towels, bathroom suites, porcelain and tissues. On these I will brook absolutely no compromise!
